“I am a highly experienced and qualified Timber and Damp Surveyor with nearly 35 years practical experience in dealing with all aspects of dampness and timber infestation / defects in all types of domestic, commercial and historic building construction.
Born and educated in Portsmouth I joined the industry in the late 1970’s, gaining recognised qualifications in Timber and Damp Surveying (C.T.I.S & C.R.D.S) holding surveying and management position with a leading specialist treatment company in Hampshire, before relocating to the West Country where I started my own business in the early 1990’s, which I ran successfully before selling the company in 2004, allowing me to work as an Independent Specialist Timber and Damp Surveyor.
Operating in an area with a high volume of period and historic buildings (stone, timber framed, cob etc.) led my interest and study of traditional building design and conservation. As well as the occasional need for a more sympathetic approach to dealing with dampness and timber defects, beyond the standard solutions offered by the remedial treatment industry.
I have in the past lectured on timber and damp issues, as well as structural masonry repair and have also appeared on several consumer based programs as their resident expert.
In 2005, following my 5 year study, I produced a technical paper reporting on the ‘effects of central heating and the incidence of wood boring beetle activity in domestic housing’. This following the BBC’s ‘Raising the Roof’ series in which they claimed that “woodworm was being eliminated in domestic housing, by the introduction of central heating”. The paper (supported by data collection) dispelled this myth and was published in numerous industry and Building / Architectural journals.
I am a board member of the Independent Surveyors with the Property Care Association (incorporating the British Wood Preserving and Damp Proofing Association) and I am also an Associate Member of the Institute of Building Engineers.
I hold a CSCS Management level Health & Safety card and I am fully insured for Public Liability and Professional Indemnity.”
